Calcium carbonate is used as a nutrient supplement, pH control/buffering agent, anti-caking agent, stabilizer and thickener, and used in the production of paint, adhesives, plastics, paper, rubber, textiles, inks, and chalk (HSDB 2014). It is produced via the reaction of calcium chloride and sodium or ammonium carbonate or refined from deposits of limestone, marble, or chalk (HSDB 2014). Calcium carbonate is listed as Generally Recognized As Safe (GRAS) by the U.S. FDA (2013).
